Speedburner Athletes and Teams in Action this Week:
In NFL Action:
The New Orleans Saints defeated the Detroit Lions 45-28 on Saturday in the NFC Wild Card game. The loss ends the Lions season at 10-6 while the Saints, 13-3 move on to face the San Francisco 49ers next weekend. Playing for Detroit is Speedburner OLB DeAndre Levy and for the Saints is Speedburner QB Chase Daniel.
The Houston Texans defeated the Cincinnati Bengals 31-10 on Saturday in the AFC Wild Card game. The Bengals end their season at 9-7. The Texans win their first ever playoff game and advance next week to face the Baltimore Ravens. Playing for the Texans is Speedburner FB James Casey and for the Bengals is Speedburner DE Frostee Rucker. Frostee had 1 tackle and James had 1 carry in the game.
The Denver Broncos once again pulled it off, this time rallying in overtime to defeat the Pittsburgh Steelers in an AFC playoff game on Sunday. The Broncos now move on to face the New England Patriots next weekend with the winner advancing to the AFC Championship Game. Playing for Denver is Speedburner OT Ryan Clady.
The Atlanta Falcons saw their season end with a 24-2 loss to the New York Giants on Saturday in the NFC Wild Card game. The Falcons end the season at 10-7 and New York advances to face the defending Super Bowl Champion Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field. Playing for Atlanta is Speedburner TE Tommy Gallarda and for the Giants is Speedburner kick returner Will Blackmon. Will returned 5 punts for 12 yards in the game.
Speedburner TE Evan Moore caught 4 passes for 39 yards in the final regular season game and finished his season with the Cleveland Browns tied for the lead in TD receptions. The Browns dropped the game 13-9 to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Evan just completed his third year in the league. The Browns finished the year with a 4-12 record.
The Minnesota Vikings ended their season with a 17-13 loss to the Chicago Bears to finish at a disappointing 3-13. Playing for the Vikings is Speedburner DE Brian Robison.
The Miami Dolphins finished the year at 6-10 with a 19-17 win over the New York Jets. Speedburner WR Davone Bess had 6 catches for 45 yards in the game for the Dolphins.
College Football Accolades:
Speedburner ILB Manti Te’o named FBS Defensive Player of the Week
Speedburner ILB Manti Te’o recorded a team-high 12 tackles as Notre Dame defeated Boston College 16-14 on Senior Day in South Bend. His tackle total included a half tackle for loss, and he added three quarterback hurries in helping the Fighting Irish secure a fourth consecutive victory. Manti’s double-digit takedown tally was his seventh of the season and 16th of his career; he has also led Notre Dame in tackles seven times this season and 17 times over his career. Congratulations Manti!
Manti is also a finalist for the Butkus Award, presented annually to the top linebacker in college football, and was recently selected a finalist for the 2011 Lott Impact Trophy. The award goes to the defensive player who has had the biggest IMPACT on his team, both on and off the field. The IMPACT acronym is Integrity, Maturity, Performance, Academics, Community and Tenacity.
*Manti has chosen to forgo the NFL Draft and return for his Senior year.
Speedburner QB Kellen Moore has been named a finalist for three national awards this year – the Manning Award and the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award (outstanding QB) and the Maxwell Award which goes to the nation's most outstanding player. Kellen was also named Mountain West Offensive Player of the Year.
Speedburner DB Richard Torres from Hawaii was given the Captain’s Award at the team’s banquet on Sunday. Other burners receiving awards were DT Kaniela Tuipulotu receiving the Warrior Award, and Kamalani Alo receiving the Most Outstanding Special Team Award. Congrats to our Hawaii Burners!
Richard Torres and Kaniela Tuipulotu were named to the All – WAC Conference team.
Recent Accolades:
Speedburner soccer player Kendall VanDine from Fresno State closed out a stellar career by becoming only the second Bulldog in program history to be named a Capital One CoSIDA Academic All-American. Named to the third team, Kendall was the only student-athlete from the Western Athletic Conference to make the prestigious squad. Congratulations Kendall!
Speedburner OLB Dominick Sierra has committed to Northern Colorado. Dominick prepped at La Habra high then went on to Cerritos College. Congrats Dominick!
Speedburner softball player Jasmine Mejia signed with Cal Berkeley to continue her career at the collegiate level. Jasmine is a senior at Arlington high school in Riverside. Congratulations Jasmine!
In High School Basketball:
Speedburner Katin Reinhardt led Mater Dei to an easy 98-67 win over Foothill of Nevada on Thursday. Katin led all scorers with 22 points.
Speedburner Tyler Emard chipped in 2 points as Servite defeated Arroyo Grande on Thursday.
On the Girls Side:
Speedburner Katie Lou Samuelson scored 22 points in a win over Millikan of Long Beach to lead Edison to the Championship Title in the Orange County Championships on Thursday. Katie Lou was also named the Tournament MVP. The win moves the Chargers to 10-2 on the year.
Speedburner Lexi Atchley scored 11 points with 8 rebounds and 6 assists in Yorba Linda’s 58-52 loss to Warren on Thursday.
In Major League Baseball Action:
The St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Texas Rangers 4 games to 3 to win the World Series in a thrilling series. Congratulations to Speedburners Jaime Garcia and Lance Berkman of the Cardinals!
SPEEDBURNER CHAD OWENS SETS PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALL RECORD!
Speedburner WR Chad Owens of the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League became the first player in professional football to amass 3000 total yards in back to back seasons. Chad is a WR and punt and kick returner who played his collegiate ball at the University of Hawaii.
The Flyin’ Hawaiian is having another sensational year. He leads the CFL in kickoff return yards and average, and is on pace to set a CFL record for kickoff return yards in a season. He leads the CFL in punt return yards and is second in punt return average (among those with at least 20 punt returns) and leads the CFL with two kick return touchdowns. Entering this week’s game he was averaging a staggering 192 combined yards per game.

Injury Notes:
Speedburner RB DJ Shoemate from UConn is out for the season with a shoulder injury. DJ recently had surgery to repair a torn labrum and will return to the Huskies next season. Get well soon DJ!
Speedburner soccer player Wes Feighner from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo has suffered a knee injury that will end his colleg career. Wes is a pro prospect and has been invited to the Major League Soccer Combine in January.

Speedburner Madison VanDine recently had surgery to repair a torn meniscus in her knee. Maddie plays soccer for the University of Rhode Island. She is back training and rehabbing.
SPEEDBURNER QB KELLEN MOORE ON COVER OF SPORTS ILLUSTRATED!
Speedburner QB Kellen Moore from Boise State will be on the next cover of Sports Illustrated hitting newstands this week. Kellen led the Broncos to a dominating win over SEC opponent Georgia last week.
Kellen also became the winningest QB in college football history, finishing his career with a record of 50-3, eclipsing Colt McCoys record. Congrats Kellen!

In High School Football:
Speedburner WR Delshawn McLellon from Gahr has been named the Player of the Week. Delshawn finished his high school career as the number 3 all time receptions leader in the state of California and 10th in all time yardage. Delshawn will continue his football career at the University of Utah next season. Congratulations Delshawn!
The Speedburner Brea Olinda Wildcats moved to 9-2 with a 27-20 Southwest Division first round playoff win versus Capo Valley on Friday night. RB Josh Vizcaya scored three TDs, a 2 pt. conversion and threw a TD pass to WR Augie Buoncore to lead the Wildcat victory. Up next for Brea is defending CIF Champion La Habra next Friday night at home.
In a Pac 5 Division first round game, defending champion Servite easily dispatched Long Beach Wilson 41-3 to move to 10-1 on the year. The Friars will face Tesoro next week in the second round. Playing for Servite are Speedburners DBs Sean DeRosa, Tyler Emard and Mike Lawn.
Speedburner RB Alex Suchesk rushed for 133 yards on 14 carries to lead Santa Margarita to a 45-21 win over Bishop Amat in their first round game. Playing for Bishop Amat is Speedburner ILB Idilio Sanchez. Up next for the Eagles is Long Beach Poly.
The Speedburner Sonora Raiders lost in their first round game to Villa Park 56-13 on Friday night. The loss ends the Raider’s season at 4-7.
Yorba Linda defeated Troy in a first round Southwest Division game by the score of 28-23. The Mustangs move to 10-1 and will face in the second round. Troy ends their season at 7-4. Playing for the Warriors are Speedburners OLB Trent Matthews and OT Travis Bair and for Yorba Linda is RB Cole Griffin.
Redlands East Valley defeated Norco 14-10 to advance to the second round of the CIF playoffs on Friday night. Playing for REV is Speedburner OLB Daniel Dowdy.
Arcadia moved to 9-2 with a 39-13 first round playoff win versus Bonita on Friday night. The Apaches will face La Mirada next week in a second round game. Playing for Arcadia is Speedburner ILB Austin Ford.
In Hawaii High School Football:
The Speedburner Kahuku Red Raiders once again won the Hawaii State Championship. Congratulations to the coaches and players of Kahuku!
In Texas High School Football:
Magnolia West faces Dayton in a second round game tonight. The Mustangs advanced with a 41-19 win over Summer creejk last week as RB Desmond Richards rushed for 350 yards and four TDs. Playing for West are Speedburners LB Anthony Ojeda, QB Tyler Anderson, WR Jeremy Jordan, QB Jason Stephens, WR Trevor Buckley, LB Tyler Huff and Kyle Crawford.
The Woodlands moved to 5-0 with a 49-10 win over Atascocita on Friday night. The Highlanders enter a bye week and resume play on Oct. 6 versus Lufkin. Playing for the Woodlands are Speedburners WRs Colin McLellan and Christian Jaurequi, and QB Lance Miles, 12 of 16 for 252 yards and 2 TDs.
In Pop Warner Football:
Speedburners Chase Parker and Lance Dravis of Canyon Hills recently won the Orange Bowl, defeating Tustin 38-14. Chase plays in the Pop Warner Division 1 Junior Midget Division. Congratulations Chase and Lance!
SPEEDBURNER WES FEIGHNER NOMINATED FOR PRESTIGIOUS AWARD!
Speedburner soccer player Wes Feighner from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo made athletics department history on Wednesday morning by becoming the first men’s soccer player and just the second Cal Poly athlete to be named as a candidate for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award. Wes, a three-year captain who has started 54 of 55 games during his career, is one of 30 finalists for the honor, which recognizes outstanding performances in the classroom, community and on the playing field.
Wes, a kinesiology major, was honored in March as Cal Poly’s Big West Conference Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the 2010-11 academic term. A seven-time selection to the Dean’s List at Cal Poly, he was also named to the Big West Academic Fall All-Conference team in 2009 and 2010.
On the field, Wes earned All-Big West and NSCAA All-Far West Region second team praise last year after starting all 18 of Cal Poly’s matches and compiling three assists.
In the community, Wes volunteers time for clinics at local schools through Cal Poly’s Student of the Game program and has helped local AYSO coaches organize practices and strategize for matches. As a kinesiology major and through the department’s PolyFIT program, he helps administer body composition tests for students to be aware of potential cardiovascular disease and other health risks.
Wes’ work ethic and character are second to none and we are proud to have him as part of the Speedburner family. Great job and Congratulations Wes!

NFL Coaching News:
Former Speedburner football player Byron Storer enters his second season as an NFL assistant coach. Byron is the Special Teams assistant with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Nicknamed "Twinkletoes" at Speedburners for his light footwork, Byron came to us out of Cal Berkeley and played 3 years with Tampa Bay before tearing the ACL in his knee. A tireless worker we all knew Byron would be in a leadership position one day.

Speedburner WR Chad Owens had 4 receptions for 46 yards, 4 punt returns for 18 yards, and 6 kickoff returns for 95 yards for the Toronto Argonauts in their 36-23 loss to the Montreal Alouettes on Friday night. The loss drops the Argos to 5-3 on the year. They travel to face the Hamilton Tiger Cats next week.
In NCAA College Football:
Speedburner football players Ronald Powell and Manti Teo are featured in this month’s edition of The Sporting News. Ronald is a DE playing for the Florida Gators and Manti is an ILB playing for Notre Dame. They were the top defensive players in their classes coming out of high school.
Speedburner QB Kellen Moore from Boise State has been named the preseason Player of the Year in the Mountain West Conference. Kellen, entering his senior year is coming of an MVP season in the WAC Conference as well as a Heisman Trophy Finalist.

Speedburner Kendall VanDine has been named to the College Soccer 360.com Primetime Performers Honor Roll last week. Kendall, from Fresno State is ranked in the top ten in assists and assists per game in the WAC Conference. She is also a team captain. Congrats Kendall!
